Your Party's Inaugural Conference Shows Scant Sign of a New Beginning

As the notion of a recent progressive party spearheaded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana was first mooted in the summer, it was so popular that countless individuals showed enthusiasm in joining.

Despite being rapidly overwhelmed by internal conflicts – its founders clashed fiercely over its early governance and financial approach – many expected this weekend's launch gathering would signal a renewed effort.

Concerning First Day

A significant portion of the participants are people who left the Labour party, dissatisfied with the policies of the incumbent leadership and searching for a political home as they fear the growing influence of Reform UK.

While preparations for the party's inaugural conference were finalised, Sultana and Corbyn appeared to resolved their differences. Speaking at a socialist gathering in Manchester last month, Sultana lightheartedly likened the pair to the famous musical siblings, remarking: “I’m here to tell you the party is active again.”

But when the gates to the conference centre in Liverpool welcomed attendees on Saturday morning, Sultana was curiously absent. As Corbyn gave his introductory speech, she was sipping hot chocolate in a coffee shop about a brief walk from the location.

Structure Division

It was clear there was little agreement on how the party needed to be structured. Corbyn told journalists he favoured a traditional leadership model, with a sole leader elected to take charge, and implied he’d be prepared to compete if members chose this system.

However, in an interview, Sultana said she was advocating for a group decision-making process, with crucial policies being decided by ordinary participants – those not currently acting as political representatives. She commented that she did not think parties should be run by “single leaders”. She did, nonetheless, indicate she would be prepared to run opposing Corbyn if there was a vote for a single leader.

Negative Atmosphere

Although Sultana insisted she and the former Labour leader were on good terms – they had, she said, spoken about how they wanted the conference to be “an encouraging gathering where members are enabled” – she was sharply negative about some of his allies and group leaders whom she thinks are undermining her. She would not specify who, but it is known that the relationship between her supporters and Corbyn’s ex-senior aide Karie Murphy are especially tense.

The politician – who left Labour in July – further stated that there was still a “harmful environment” among others in Your Party, which had caused “pressure, coercion and defamation” and “acts of deliberate sabotage”.

Boycott and Internal Divisions

Tensions came to a head around midday when it emerged Sultana would boycott the first day of the conference, in alliance with prospective attendees who had been denied entry from the event due to affiliations with other progressive movements – especially the the SWP. Her spokesperson labeled this a “targeted purge”, stating: “It is essential to create a party that welcomes all socialists.”

Corbyn's associates – who mistakenly stated on Saturday morning that the the group was registered with the Electoral Commission – were furious, alleging Sultana had attempted attempting to stage a “distraction”. They believe permitting dual affiliations would create chaos and heighten group conflicts which already appears to have crippled the emerging organization.

Concerning the standing of the the political group, one supporter of Corbyn said: “Even if it is not officially listed by the Electoral Commission but it is nonetheless a political group. The name speaks for itself.”

Disappointment Among Participants

Many delegates were annoyed that Saturday’s proceedings became dominated by group conflicts when they would have rather address key issues such as the cost of living crisis and migration policy, as well as strategising for next year’s local elections.

Your Party is still considering if it will run its own nominees or back socialist independents and some members feel the party will have failed if it is not listed for election as an option besides Labour.

Hope for Sunday

The result is unclear if proceedings can be recovered on Sunday, when the decisions of important ballots – such as the final designation and organizational system – will be announced. Sultana plans to attend and speak to the crowd, which has reassured those who still desire unity.

But the majority of attendees remained disheartened as they departed of the conference hall into a rainy Liverpool night on Saturday. It's possible the sentiment of the day was captured by a single participant, who said: “My generous drink is transforming into a entire container.”
