The controversial, United States and Israel-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) declares it is winding down its aid operations in the affected area, after almost six months.

The foundation had previously halted its several relief locations in Gaza after the halt in hostilities between Palestinian factions and Israel came into force six weeks ago.

The foundation sought to bypass the UN as the chief distributor of humanitarian assistance to Gazans.

UN and other aid agencies declined to participate with its approach, claiming it was unethical and unsafe.

Numerous Gazans were fatally wounded while attempting to obtain sustenance amid chaotic scenes near the organization's distribution points, mostly by Israeli fire, according to the UN.

The Israeli military claimed its forces fired alerting fire.

Program Termination

The GHF said on the beginning of the week that it was concluding activities now because of the "effective conclusion of its crisis response", with a total of three million packages containing the corresponding to over 187 million food portions provided to residents.

The foundation's chief officer, the executive director, additionally stated the United States-operated coordination body - which has been set up to help execute the American administration's Gaza initiative - would be "taking over and developing the approach the organization demonstrated".

"The organization's system, in which Hamas could no longer loot and profit from stealing aid, played a huge role in getting Hamas to the table and securing a halt in hostilities."

Comments and Positions

Hamas - which denies stealing aid - supported the shutdown of the humanitarian foundation, according to reports.

A spokesman for stated the organization should be held accountable for the damage it inflicted to local residents.

"We request all worldwide humanitarian bodies to guarantee that responsibility is assigned after causing the death and injury of many residents and covering up the food deprivation strategy practised by the Israeli government."

Foundation History

The GHF began operations in Gaza on late May, a short period subsequent to Israeli authorities had somewhat relaxed a total blockade on relief and commercial goods to Gaza that continued for 77 days and led to substantial deficiencies of necessary provisions.

Three months later, a nutritional emergency was proclaimed in Gaza City.

The GHF's food distribution sites in various parts of the Palestinian territory were administered by US private security contractors and positioned in Israeli military zones.

Relief Agency Issues

International organizations and their affiliates stated the methodology breached the fundamental humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality and independence, and that guiding distressed residents into militarised zones was inherently unsafe.

United Nations human rights division reported it tracked the fatalities of no fewer than 859 Gazans seeking food in the area surrounding organization centers between late May through end of July.

Another 514 people were lost their lives close to the routes of UN and other aid convoys, it added.

The greater part of these people were fatally wounded by the Israel's armed forces, as per the organization's documentation.

Divergent Narratives

Israel's armed services claimed its soldiers had discharged cautionary rounds at individuals who came near them in a "threatening" way.

The GHF said there were no shootings at the relief locations and claimed the international organization of using "false and misleading" data from the Gazan medical department controlled by militant factions.

Future Implications

The organization's continuation had been uncertain since militant groups and the Israeli government approved a truce agreement to implement the primary segment of the United States' reconciliation proposal.

The agreement stated relief provision would take place "absent meddling from the both sides through the international bodies and their affiliates, and the international relief society, in conjunction with other worldwide bodies not associated in any manner" with Hamas and Israel.

UN spokesperson the international body's communicator said on Monday that the GHF's shutdown would have "no influence" on its work "since we never collaborated with them".

The official further mentioned that while additional assistance was reaching the Palestinian territory since the truce was implemented on October 10th, it was "insufficient to address all necessities" of the 2.1 million residents.
